Széchenyi University has been awarded a grant in the Interreg Danube competition, partly funded by the European Union. Dr Gábor Guti, a member of the Natural Aquatic Fish Management Research Group, is responsible for overseeing the success of the international research on fish management. The three-year project aims to establish and test a cross-border system for monitoring sturgeon and protecting migratory fish in the Danube. The international research project, led by the Romanian Ministry of Environment, Water and Forestry, also involves the participation of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the Central and Eastern European Environment Organisation, and the State University of Moldova.

The TRANSFER Danube project aims to analyze the new patterns of climatic extreme events (drought, floods, heat waves, e.g.) and design/develop the necessary tools for agriculture in the Danube region in order to be able to properly adapt and respond to such challenges. The project will develop a Danube transnational e-platform that will integrate climatic/water resources/agriculture database, maps, knowledge, tools, modelling, good practices for water management, for reducing drought in order to be prepared and adapt to climate change in the vulnerable areas for crops in the Danube Region. The lead partner is the National Meteorological Administration in Romania, and partners include universities (e.g. University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna; Széchenyi István University, Hungary), nonprofit organizations (Central Danube Development Agency Nonprofit Ltd., Hungary; Association “Centre for Sustainability and Economic Growth”, Bulgaria) and business partner (Sensum, business consulting firm, Croatia).

HORIZON-MISS-2024-Ocean-01-02 tender, Széchenyi University secured a HUF 110 million grant for its research project titled "Sustainable Water Management and Integrated Management of Fish Migration and Habitats in the Danube River Basin and the North-Western Black Sea. - SWIM". The project supports the implementation of the European Green Deal, the Biodiversity Strategy, the Water Framework Directive, the Habitats Directive, and policies for the protection of freshwater ecosystems by monitoring and protecting fish habitats and species. The project fosters transnational cooperation among stakeholders, including governmental bodies, NGOs, researchers, and local communities, through the SWIM Alliance. The two-year research project is led by the University of Zagreb in Croatia, in partnership with institutions such as the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in Germany, the Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development in Romania, and the Technical University of Košice in Slovakia. The project will be coordinated by Dr Katalin Bene, Associate Professor at the Department of Transport Infrastructure and Water Resources Engineering at Széchenyi University.

Horizon-CL6-2024 climate project targets climate protection actions. On the Hungarian side, the five-year climate protection research will be led by Dr István Kulmány, head of the Agricultural and Food Industry Research Centre at the Smart Farm in Mosonmagyaróvár. The ClimateSmartExperiments (CSE) programme aims to establish and coordinate an active network of research stations and associated research communities across all EU Member States and associated countries, with the goal of developing joint, creative research approaches and innovative solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation. The consortium will be led by research institutes of the Dutch Stichting Wageningen, with partners including the University of Leeds in the UK, the French National Institute for Agricultural Research, and the Cypriot Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.

National Media and Infocommunications Authority Supports the Research and Development Activities of Széchenyi István University. Széchenyi István University maintains a long-standing strategic partnership with Hungary’s National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) to advance education, research, and innovation in telecommunications, digitalisation, and information technologies. In 2025, the Authority provided financial support for professional programmes, research activities, and infrastructure development, including projects related to cybersecurity, quantum communication, satellite technologies, and space communications. The cooperation also supports scholarships, curriculum development, conferences, and professional training opportunities for students and researchers. Through this partnership between a higher education institution and a national public authority, Széchenyi István University contributes to scientific advancement, digital innovation, and the development of knowledge and skills needed to address future technological and societal challenges.
National Intellectual Property Office provides “patent fast track” for Széchenyi István University. Széchenyi István University strengthened its collaboration with the National Intellectual Property Office (SZTNH) through an expanded partnership designed to accelerate the transfer of research results into practical applications. A central element of the agreement is the introduction of a “patent fast track” service, which provides early novelty searches and patentability assessments, enabling researchers to identify promising innovations more efficiently and make informed decisions about intellectual property protection. By supporting knowledge transfer, fostering innovation, and enhancing cooperation between academia and a national public institution, the initiative contributes to a more sustainable innovation ecosystem where research outcomes can generate long-term economic and societal value. The partnership also promotes responsible management of intellectual property and helps ensure that scientific knowledge can be translated into solutions that support sustainable development and competitiveness.
International relations: Nebraska’s Secretary of State visited Széchenyi István University in Győr. Széchenyi István University welcomed a high-level American delegation led by Robert B. Evnen, Secretary of State of Nebraska, to explore opportunities for cooperation in agriculture, innovation, education, and research. Discussions focused on agricultural research, sustainability objectives, agricultural digitalisation, precision farming, and technological development, with the aim of identifying areas for future Hungarian–American collaboration. The visit involved diplomatic representatives and stakeholders from both countries and highlighted shared interests in sustainable development and innovation. By establishing governmental and international relationships that can support future joint research and educational initiatives, the University contributes to strengthening international cooperation and partnerships relevant to sustainable development goals.
Climate-Adapted Cities Project. Széchenyi István University participates in the Climate-Adapted (Heat-Resilient) Cities project, a 30‑month cross-border collaboration between Győr (Hungary) and Graz (Austria) aimed at reducing the health risks associated with climate change and heat waves while strengthening urban resilience. The consortium is led by the Municipality of Graz, demonstrating direct cooperation between higher education and local government in the development of evidence-based climate adaptation measures. The project brings together a diverse partnership consisting of Széchenyi István University (Faculty of Health and Sport Sciences), the Municipality of Graz, the United Health and Social Institution of Győr, the St. Andrew Rheumatology Hospital and Medicinal Spa of Hévíz, and the Family and Child Welfare Centre of Győr. The collaboration therefore includes government bodies, healthcare institutions, social service organisations, and civil society/community welfare organisations, ensuring a multi-stakeholder approach to SDG-related policy development and implementation. Within the project, partners conduct situation analyses, develop city-specific interventions, apply a common indicator-based evaluation framework, establish expert networks, deliver training programmes, and organise an international conference in Győr.
Cross sectoral Dialogues about SDGs (17.2.2)
In 2025, Széchenyi István University hosted and organized several events targeting the cross-sectorial dialogues about SDGs. The collaborations involve not only the best universities in the world, but also industrial partners, governments and partners representing the society.
Students of Széchenyi István University earn credits and cultural experiences through the Culture Connects programme. Széchenyi István University joined the national Culture Connects Programme, launched by the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, in collaboration with the Győr National Theatre, the Győr Ballet, the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Rómer Flóris Museum of Art and History. Through this partnership, students can earn academic credits by participating in cultural events that promote understanding of cultural heritage, community values, and intercultural awareness. By bringing together higher education, government, and cultural institutions, the initiative strengthens cross-sector cooperation and supports social sustainability through cultural engagement, inclusive learning opportunities, and the preservation and dissemination of cultural knowledge.
Széchenyi István University and Zheijan Jiaxing University Establish Joint Confucius Institute. On 15 November 2025, in Beijing, representatives of Széchenyi István University, Zhejiang Jiaxing University and the Chinese International Education Foundation signed the agreement establishing a joint Confucius Institute at the Győr-based institution. The initiative marks a new milestone in Hungarian–Chinese cultural, educational and economic cooperation, offering significant support in the fields of language teaching, research and academic mobility. The establishment of the Confucius Institute at Széchenyi István University marks another important stage in multifaceted development. Confucius Institute in Győr will provide comprehensive support to deepening educational, research, economic and cultural relations between the two universities, and more broadly, between the two countries. The institute will contribute to the sustainable development of teaching Chinese language and culture, support joint scientific projets, and promote staff and student mobility.
Education and tourism development: Széchenyi István University signs cooperation agreement with Xantus János Zoo. Széchenyi István University strengthened its partnership with the Xantus János Zoo in Győr through a formal cooperation agreement focused on education, research, innovation, and sustainability. The collaboration involves the University’s faculties and its vocational secondary school and supports joint activities in tourism, agriculture, animal sciences, and environmental research. The partners will work together on research and development projects related to animal health, nutrition, and soil testing, while zoo experts will contribute to teaching, practical training, student projects, and thesis supervision. The partnership also promotes biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and sustainable tourism development, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange between academia and a community-based conservation institution. Through this long-term collaboration, the University supports cross-sector cooperation that contributes to sustainability, environmental awareness, and the protection of natural values.
Students from twenty universities sought sustainable solutions to real corporate challenges during the Audi Development Camp, a joint short study programme of Széchenyi István University and Audi Hungaria Zrt. (industrial partner), held between 7–14 July, 2025. The results presented at the international camp’s closing event demonstrated that the participants are ready to face global challenges. Young students from 20 universities across 17 countries took part in the camp, where they explored sustainable solutions to real-life corporate challenges. This year’s theme focused on analysing Audi Hungaria’s water management in Győr—which hosts a car factory, engine plant, development centre and service centre—through the lens of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) principles. Working in teams, the participants applied a design thinking approach centred on creative problem-solving to address challenges in sustainability, ethical operations, and environmental responsibility.
Sustainable Energy Education and Research: Széchenyi István University’s Cooperation with Green Energy Investhor PLC. Széchenyi István University has established a strategic partnership with Green Energy Investhor Plc, a leading company in Hungary’s renewable energy sector, to advance education, research, and innovation in sustainable energy. Through this collaboration, the university integrates industry expertise into its academic activities, strengthening education in renewable energy, energy innovation, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices. The partnership supports sustainable development by promoting clean energy solutions, fostering research and development, and preparing future professionals with practical skills through industry-led lectures, research supervision, and internship opportunities. By combining academic knowledge with real-world industrial experience, the collaboration contributes to the green transition, supports the development of sustainable energy systems, and helps address long-term environmental and energy challenges.

SZE Becomes First European Higher Education Institution to Conduct Drone Operations Under Its Own Authority. Széchenyi István University became the first higher education institution in Europe to obtain a Light UAS Operator Certificate (LUC), the highest level of authorization available under the European Union drone regulatory framework. The achievement was made possible through a long-term collaboration between the University’s Digital Development Centre and Cloud for Intelligent Airspace (CloudIA) Zrt., which jointly developed the operational procedures and flight safety management systems required for certification. The authorization enables the University to independently conduct drone-based research, development, and educational activities while maintaining compliance with European aviation standards. The partnership supports innovation in fields including environmental monitoring, geoinformatics, transport systems, and digital technologies, providing students and researchers with opportunities to work with advanced drone applications under real operational conditions. Through this collaboration between higher education, industry, and regulatory stakeholders, the University contributes to technological innovation and sustainable development.
Professional Investment: SZE Acquires Stake in Former Students’ E-Mobility Start-up. Széchenyi István University, through its technology transfer company Uni Inno Plc., invested in EV.analytica Ltd., an e-mobility start-up founded by former university students. The company develops digital solutions designed to simplify electric vehicle charging by integrating multiple service providers into a single platform, thereby supporting the wider adoption of sustainable mobility. The investment was implemented in collaboration with venture capital partners Lunar Program Plc. and Septem Lute LLC, demonstrating the University’s commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship through partnerships with industry and investors. By combining academic expertise, business development, and investment support, the initiative contributes to the development of a knowledge-based economy and promotes innovation in sustainable transport technologies.
SZE strengthens ties with a drone service company. Széchenyi István University strengthened its longstanding partnership with Drónkuckó, a Hungarian company specializing in remote sensing and drone services, through a renewed cooperation agreement focused on education, research, and innovation. The collaboration supports drone technology training, student research projects, and joint participation in domestic and international grant applications, while providing access to advanced drone technologies for research and practical education. Through the partnership, industry experts contribute to teaching activities and skills development programmes, ensuring that students gain up-to-date, market-relevant knowledge and hands-on experience. By combining academic expertise with industry know-how, the initiative promotes innovation, technological development, and sustainable knowledge transfer, while strengthening cross-sector collaboration in support of sustainable development goals.

Széchenyi István University not only measures outcomes, but provides reliable, evidence-based information supporting policymakers and other stakeholders involved in the development efforts.
Development of Microbial Solutions for Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Agriculture and Agroforestry. Széchenyi István University participates in a three-year international research project entitled Development of Microbial Solutions for Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Agriculture and Agroforestry. The initiative aims to promote the agricultural use of microbial products, including biofertilizers and biopesticides, as sustainable alternatives to synthetic agricultural inputs. The project contributes to the development of environmentally sustainable farming practices that support climate resilience and sustainable food production. The project is led by Evologic Technologies GmbH (Austria) and is implemented through an international consortium that includes Széchenyi István University (Hungary), MAVAD Nonprofit Ltd. (Hungary), and Lajtamag Ltd. (Hungary). This partnership brings together higher education, industry, and nonprofit-sector expertise to advance research and innovation in sustainable agriculture. Within the project, Széchenyi István University is responsible for establishing small-plot field experiments, carrying out measurements, and evaluating the collected data. Through these activities, the university contributes to the generation of scientific evidence on the effectiveness of microbial agricultural solutions and supports international knowledge creation related to sustainable agriculture and climate adaptation.
Two SZE Lecturers Elected to Committees of Prestigious International Law Scholarly Society. Széchenyi István University demonstrates strong international collaboration by contributing expertise to the International Law Association (ILA), a prestigious global scholarly society. Two university lecturers, Dr. Gábor Kecskés and Dr. Gábor Sulyok, were elected to the ILA’s scientific committees focusing on space law and artificial intelligence, respectively. Their appointments strengthen international academic networks, promote knowledge exchange, and support collaborative research on emerging global challenges.
Advancing Healthcare Innovation. Széchenyi István University expands global partnerships in Madrid. The Technical University of Madrid recently hosted another session of the professional event series implemented with the support of Széchenyi István University, based on the LinQ Catalyst methodology developed by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). The workshop, focused on advancing healthcare innovation and fostering international partnerships, aimed to finalise medical technology project ideas developed within the programme.
Successful Engineers for Students: Széchenyi István University Once Again Hosts Formula Student Symposium. More than 250 students from nine countries and 20 teams attended Széchenyi István University’s 11th Formula Student Symposium, where industry experts and motorsport engineers shared practical knowledge, networking and mentorship; the event showcased experiential, interdisciplinary learning, strong university–industry partnerships with companies like Audi Hungaria and Red Bull Powertrains, support for innovation and applied engineering, and pathways to employment and skills development for students entering the automotive and motorsport workforce.
Széchenyi István University and Polotécnico De Leiria Collaborate In Education And Research. Széchenyi István University and Politécnico de Leiria have developed a comprehensive international partnership that supports education, research, and academic knowledge exchange. Originating through the RUN-EU alliance, the collaboration has expanded to include short study programmes, a joint Tourism Management Double Degree Master’s Programme, co-supervised doctoral research, and cooperation in conferences and scientific publications. The partnership enables students and researchers to gain international experience, share expertise across disciplines, and contribute to the development of new knowledge through joint academic activities. By fostering international research collaboration, mobility, and scientific exchange, the cooperation strengthens global academic networks and supports the generation and dissemination of knowledge relevant to sustainable development challenges.

Strengthening Scientific Relations: Second Meeting of the Scottish–Hungarian Scholars’ Society. Széchenyi István University hosted the second meeting of the Scottish–Hungarian Scholars’ Society at the Győr Innovation Park, bringing together researchers and academic leaders from leading Scottish and Hungarian universities. Established to strengthen scientific cooperation between the two countries, the Society promotes researcher and student exchange, joint research projects, scientific publications, and international conferences. Representatives from the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen joined Hungarian scholars and policymakers to explore future cooperation opportunities and expand international research networks. Through participation in this initiative, Széchenyi István University supports international knowledge exchange and collaborative research activities in areas including sustainability, digitalisation, and innovation, contributing to global scientific cooperation and sustainable development.
Collaboration for SDG Best Practice (17.2.4)
Széchenyi István University is committed for collaboration, especially under the „umbrella” of sustainable development around SDGs. These activities involve reviewing and comparing the strategies of different countries and sectors, as well as different disciplines and research fields.
Green connections – Nature-Based Solutions and Sustainable Land Management in the Austrian-Hungarian Border Region. Széchenyi István University leads the 33‑month Green Connections – Nature-Based Solutions and Sustainable Land Management in the Austrian–Hungarian Border Region project, which aims to strengthen the long-term conservation of biodiversity through research, education, and practical measures. The project addresses sustainable land management challenges by generating evidence and translating research findings into practical guidance for stakeholders. As part of the programme, biodiversity assessments are conducted on 80 agricultural sites, providing comparable data on the effects of organic and conventional farming practices on biodiversity. Based on the results, practical recommendations for farmers are developed and published in a bilingual guide, supporting the transfer of sustainable agricultural and biodiversity conservation practices. The project also includes the establishment of demonstration areas featuring endangered wildflower species in both Austria and Hungary, accompanied by science outreach activities that involve local communities. These actions promote biodiversity awareness and encourage public engagement in environmental stewardship. The project is implemented through an international partnership involving: Széchenyi István University (Hungary) – Project Lead; Biosphere Reserve Wienerwald Management (Austria); Esterhazy Betriebe AG (Austria) and Pisztráng Kör Waldorf Nature Conservation and Hiking Association (Hungary).
Renowned Professors Speak at Széchenyi István University’s Conference on Sustainability (COS Conference on Sustainability). Researchers from five continents and over 100 experts attended Széchenyi István University’s third Conference on Sustainability (10–12 November, 2025), presenting 102 papers across nine sections on industrial and agricultural sustainability, corporate responsibility, circular economy, sustainable energy and climate resilience, urban development, infrastructure and transport. Keynotes and plenary speakers included renowned scholars from Austria, China, the Philippines, Italy, Australia, the UK, South Korea, the Netherlands and the US, and the event established collaborations with conferences in Malaysia and the Netherlands to publish special journal issues. Rector Dr. Ferenc Friedler highlighted the conference’s role in fostering interdisciplinary, international research partnerships that drive system-level change and high-quality publications. The programme maps directly to several SDGs.

SZE’s International Conference Focuses on Technological, Educational and Social Challenges. Széchenyi István University organized the International Conference on Technological, Educational, Social and International Challenges in the Changing World (TESIC), bringing together approximately 160 researchers from 14 countries and nearly 30 academic institutions. The conference provided an international platform for researchers, professionals, and decision-makers to exchange knowledge and explore solutions to global challenges related to artificial intelligence, digital transformation, cybersecurity, sustainability, education, and social development. The event promoted interdisciplinary and international cooperation, while conference outputs were planned for publication in international scientific journals, supporting the dissemination of knowledge and good practices. Through the TESIC conference, the University strengthened international academic networks and facilitated collaboration focused on sustainable development and societal resilience.

NATO Defence College Senior Officials Gives Lectures at Széchenyi István University, Faculty of Law and Political Sciences. Brigadier General, Dr Ferenc Molnár, a senior staff member of the NATO Defence College and honorary university professor at the Ludovika University of Public Service, recently presented the institution’s education activities and experiences, as well as the importance of civil–military cooperation from the perspective of NATO leadership, at the Deák Ferenc Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of Széchenyi István University.
Pető Point now available in Győr through collaboration with Semmelweis University and Széchenyi István University. Széchenyi István University and Semmelweis University established the first regional Pető Point outside Budapest at the University’s MedTech Health Technology Campus in Győr. The initiative expands access to conductive pedagogy services for children and adults with neurological motor disorders and developmental difficulties in the North Transdanubian region. Through the collaboration, expertise developed at Semmelweis University is transferred to a regional setting, enabling local access to specialised rehabilitation and developmental services. The Pető Point provides individual and group developmental sessions, personalised support plans, and counselling services while promoting social integration and improved quality of life. By sharing expertise and implementing a proven rehabilitation model through inter-university cooperation, the initiative contributes to the dissemination of good practices in health-related support and inclusive community development.
Bridging Nations and Cultures: SZE Hosts HÖOK Stipendium Hungaricum Mentor Network Conference. Széchenyi István University hosted the annual conference of the HÖOK Stipendium Hungaricum Mentor Network, bringing together approximately 400 international scholarship holders and representatives of several embassies. The mentor network, operated by the Hungarian National Union of Students (HÖOK), supports the integration of more than 3,000 international students studying in Hungary through mentoring, cultural programmes, and community-building activities. The conference provided a platform for the exchange of experiences and good practices related to international student integration, intercultural dialogue, and global cooperation. Through its partnership with HÖOK, scholarship programme stakeholders, diplomatic representatives, and international students from more than 90 countries, Széchenyi István University promotes international understanding, cultural exchange, and long-term collaboration networks that contribute to sustainable and inclusive development.

Széchenyi István University actively collaborates with non-governmental and nonprofit organizations to address sustainability challenges related to biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, and sustainable resource management. Through international partnerships, the University contributes scientific expertise while supporting the joint development of practical solutions with civil society organizations and public institutions.
Education and tourism development: Széchenyi István University signs cooperation agreement with Xantus János Zoo. Széchenyi István University strengthened its partnership with the Xantus János Zoo in Győr through a formal cooperation agreement focused on education, research, innovation, and sustainability. Beyond the Curriculum: Supporting Meaningful Education for Sustainable Development
Audi Development Camp – Sustainability Education in Practice. The Audi Development Camp, jointly organized by Széchenyi István University and Audi Hungaria, provides students with an international, practice-oriented learning opportunity focused on sustainability and innovation. In 2025, 31 students from 20 universities across 17 countries participated in the programme, working in multidisciplinary teams on a real industrial challenge: the ESG-based analysis of Audi Hungaria’s water management system. Using a design-thinking methodology, participants developed solutions related to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and ethical operations, while receiving academic and industry mentoring from university experts and Audi professionals. The programme brings together students from engineering, business, software development, sustainability, and legal backgrounds, enabling them to gain hands-on experience, strengthen their sustainability competencies, collaborate in international teams, and engage directly with real-world SDG-related challenges.

Culture Connects Programme – Promoting Cultural Awareness and Inclusive Education. As part of the national Culture Connects Programme, Széchenyi István University offers students the opportunity to earn academic credits through participation in cultural events and activities. Mapping Sustainability Across the Curriculum
As part of its 2025 Sustainability Report, Széchenyi István University conducted a comprehensive review of how teaching activities contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The results demonstrate that sustainability-related content is embedded across hundreds of courses and nearly all disciplines offered by the University. Particularly noteworthy (as it is shown in Table) that the majority of courses is lined to SDG 4, ADG 9 and SDG 17 demonstrating, that SDGs are embedded across almost all academic disciplines and study programmes of the Széchenyi István University.

Researchers’ Night (Kutatók Éjszakája). In 2025, Széchenyi István University once again participated in Researchers’ Night (Kutatók Éjszakája), one of Europe’s largest science communication festivals. The event was open to the public and aimed to make scientific research accessible and engaging for people of all ages. Visitors could attend lectures, laboratory demonstrations, interactive exhibitions, and educational activities delivered by university researchers and staff. Through programmes focusing on health, wellbeing, neuroscience, decision-making processes, and preventive healthcare, participants gained first-hand experience of how scientific research contributes to everyday life and societal development. Széchenyi István University’s Albert Kázmér Faculty in Mosonmagyaróvár, in partnership with the Municipality of Mosonmagyaróvár and the Kisalföld editorial office, jointly organizes the XV. Mosonmagyaróvári Nyugdíjas Egyetem (Senior University) during the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic year. The programme provides a series of educational lectures delivered both in person and online, ensuring broad public accessibility. Topics cover science, history, culture, environmental sustainability, archaeology, education, and public interest issues. The initiative is designed as a community outreach activity that extends learning opportunities beyond traditional university students. Lectures are publicly promoted through the city website, social media channels, local television, and regional media, making them accessible to local residents, senior citizens, and any interested members of the wider community.
