Affordable housing for employees (11.4.4)

Széchenyi István University provides accommodation opportunities for employees through university-managed dormitory facilities. Employees may apply for permanent dormitory accommodation and can also access guest-room accommodation at preferential rates. The accommodation is explicitly described as discounted accommodation for university employees.

In 2025 the University began converting a property adjacent to its own Hotel Famulus in Győr into staff accommodation. The resulting Famulus Apartment House provides 27 fully furnished units, each with its own bathroom and kitchen — studio apartments for up to two people, one-bedroom units, and two-bedroom units suitable for couples or families. The accommodation is available to University staff, guest professors, and athletes from the University’s partner sports clubs, at rates more favourable than market rental prices. According to the University’s Service and Brand Director, the aim is to attract and retain high-quality staff and support the institution’s domestic and international competitiveness.

The Collective Agreement of the Széchenyi István University recognizes housing support as a potential employee benefit (Section VIII, p. 9). In connection, the trade union’s role is to represent employee’s interest in consultations with the employer and to participate in establishing and enforcing rules concerning employee benefits, particularly housing support. It can help ensure that eligibility conditions, application procedures, and the amount of support are transparent and accessible to employees. Upon request, the Trade Union can help in providing financial support and assistance covering housing needs of employees.
