Planning development - new build standards (11.4.8)

Széchenyi István University applies green building principles to its construction and renovation and has set formal building-standard targets. Its Sustainability Strategy 2022–2030 (page 13) commits the University to apply green and sustainable construction principles in building and renovation and to raise the share of energy-efficient building materials. It also sets the targets of achieving BREEAM Excellent or LEED Gold certification for at least one University building by 2035 and a positive energy balance in at least one building by 2050. The Strategy (page 7) states that green spaces have been prioritised in all major investments and construction projects, and that the direct objectives of the University’s building programme are to reduce heat loss, insulate building structures, increase their lifespan and promote renewable energy use. This is reflected in the buildings: green roofs totalling 4,137 m² have been built on new University buildings (page 9), including the Új Tudástér and Inno-Share buildings, and about 1,000 kW of solar panels are installed across more than ten University buildings, alongside solar collectors and a heat pump at the Bridge building.
