Building on brownfield sites (11.4.9)

Széchenyi István University builds on brownfield sites. Its Science and Innovation Park in Győr is being developed on the former site of the Győr Biscuit and Waffle Factory in the Sziget district. The factory was a key player in the city for over a century, and its site had been unused for more than a decade. The site lies 500 metres from the central campus, on the opposite bank of the Danube, and covers 3.6 hectares. The first phase converted the factory’s landmark “cube building”, a landmark of Győr’s industrial history, into a space for laboratories, offices, and seminar and event use, and was inaugurated on 7 November 2023. The second phase was set to start in 2025, with completion estimated for 2028. The Park’s focus areas are the automotive industry, digital technologies, the creative industry, the food industry and health technologies. The project reuses previously developed land that had fallen out of use, in line with the definition of a brownfield site.
